In Murfreesboro, TN, 20% of residents 12 and older who reported drinking in 2010 stated they engaged in binge or heavy drinking. The number of people with alcohol use disorder (AUD) continues to rise. Binge drinking occurs when men have more than five drinks on one occasion and four or more for women. Nearly 100,000 people died in alcohol-related circumstances in 2020.

TRUE Addiction and Behavioral Health’s alcohol treatment centers in Murfreesboro, TN uses the latest and most effective therapeutic techniques, medications, and technologies to help our clients heal from alcohol addiction. Getting this public health concern under control is our top concern.

Why Alcohol Addiction Treatment is Important

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive alcohol use costs the state $4 billion annually. The costs are associated with legal matters, hospitalization, health problems, loss of workplace productivity, and treatment.

Alcohol is the most abused substance in Tennessee. Alcohol dependence reportedly begins during adolescents and often goes untreated into adulthood. If left untreated, alcohol addiction can lead to a mental health disorder. This is a co-occurring disorder that requires a dual diagnosis. To get help for alcohol addiction, both disorders must be treated together.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), selling alcohol to underage individuals in Tennessee causes preventable accidents and deaths yearly. In 2018, up to 6,551 years of life were lost because of alcohol consumption.

Our Approach to Alcohol Addiction Treatment at TRUE’s Tennessee Mental Health Treatment Facility

After many years of assessing and evaluating services, resources, treatment modalities, and programs our founder discovered a more in-depth method of treating people struggling. Now in hopes of receiving better outcomes, TRUE set out to revive the heartbeat of recovery by motivating the communities to be a thriving source providing better resources for recovery.

TRUE has established a program that examines all four elements of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual in knowing that this leaves the person in a position to strive for success, leaving no room for a possibility for compromise in life, avoiding bringing them back to the state of consciousness in which they have been delivered from.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)

Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) helps individuals understand unhelpful thoughts that can lead to negative emotions or behaviors. REBT focuses on the moment and what a person is feeling. Our therapists help you form new ways of approaching challenges, thoughts and circumstances. The root of the adverse emotions is addressed so that self-sabotaging behavior can taper off.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) makes individuals aware of attention and concentration problems. It improves their organization and time management. They can break down tasks easier to manage their daily lives. CBT builds confidence and controls impulsive behavior. Individuals with alcohol addiction gain confidence and can control impulsive and risky behaviors.

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) helps individuals participate in their therapy. We recommend DBT as a treatment for alcohol addiction because it is effective. DBT combines CBT, mindfulness, and acceptance strategies. DBT teaches essential skills for managing emotions, impulsive behavior, and relationships. Individuals set goals, track progress, and make decisions about their treatment.

Motivational Interviewing (MI)

Motivational interviewing is a helpful approach for individuals struggling with substance use. Motivational interviewing involves a non-judgemental and empathetic conversation with a therapist to help increase our clients’ motivation to change their behaviors. By exploring each individual’s values, goals, and concerns, the approach identifies and reinforces self-determination to begin making more positive changes.

With guidance, clients gain insights into their substance abuse patterns, develop coping skills to reduce their use, and work toward recovery. With this approach, clients have the majority ownership in the recovery process as they work to achieve personal goals.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress resulting from disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

Electrodes on the skull can track these impulses and show how they work. Capturing these pictures can tell us a lot about how the brain communicates. And through this, we can see how substance abuse has affected that communication.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) combines mindfulness and acceptance strategies. ACT combines CBT with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. The idea behind ACT is to focus on helping individuals develop mental and emotional flexibility and avoid making risky decisions.

Recovery Coaching

Recovery coaching is a supportive and personalized approach to helping our clients with alcohol addiction. It can be valuable in navigating the recovery process. Our recovery coaches are trained health professionals who provide guidance, encouragement, and accountability to individuals seeking to overcome their addiction and maintain long-term sobriety by providing another level of accountability, addiction education, and life skill development for overcoming alcohol cravings and relapse prevention.

Our Alcohol Treatment Programs at TRUE’s Tennessee Mental Health Treatment Facility

Addiction treatment programs are the best course of action for alcohol dependency. Behavioral therapy and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) work to resolve the addiction and associated underlying issues that led to addiction. Whether individuals enter an intensive outpatient or partial hospitalization program, the result will provide an improved quality of life and well-being.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are flexible and only require 9 hours, usually split into three days a week. Our treatment facility offers day and evening options to fit individual schedules. This makes it easy to incorporate into the week.

The duration and frequency of this program depends upon the individual at the therapist’s direction. IOP works best for individuals who need a more extensive treatment plan than traditional outpatient services but not residential care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) are more intensive. Individuals must finish medical detox to prepare for PHP. PHP requires individuals to attend treatment for several hours a day for several days each week.

The treatment occurs in our alcohol rehab facility and can include individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and other support services. PHP is designed for individuals who require more intensive treatment than an outpatient program. It is ideal for individuals who have completed inpatient treatment or have severe addiction but cannot commit to a full-time inpatient treatment option for personal reasons.

Sober Living

For our clients with co-occurring substance use disorder, a sober living community is an ideal option in this case. We understand the importance of treating both the mental health issue and addiction. This dual diagnosis sometimes requires medication management as part of the treatment plan.

Our sober living homes offer structured housing that provides additional accountability through drug tests and curfews. Sober living is often used in conjunction with PHP and IOP. Sober living homes offer structured accommodations that provide extra accountability through drug tests, curfews, and peer support groups. Sober living is often used with PHP and IOP and makes for an easier transition back to daily life and obligations.

What are the Symptoms of Alcohol Withdrawal?

Not only does the consumption of alcohol impact the physical and psychological body, so do withdrawal symptoms.

Those can include the following:

  • Anxiety or nervousness
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Shakiness or tremors
  • Sweating

Withdrawal from heavy alcohol use can be dangerous and lead to medical complications when you stop drinking. Dual Diagnosis Treatment at TRUE’s Tennessee Mental Health Treatment Facility

A dual-diagnosis disorder describes when a person struggles with two or more conditions simultaneously. They are often referred to as co-occurring or comorbid. Commonly, a person struggling with substance abuse will also struggle with mental illness. One or the other may occur first, but the two often worsen each other unless treated.

We understand identifying and diagnosing both conditions accurately can be challenging. It has to be done simultaneously to provide a more effective treatment plan. Most substance use disorders (SUD) worsen the symptoms of mental illness and vice versa. If only one condition is treated at a time, the risk for relapse increases.

People who self-medicate to alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, or PTSD can worsen those disorders. As their mental health deteriorates, substance use may increase until the cycle becomes almost impossible to break.
