Healing Trauma With EMDR Therapy

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is a proven, powerful treatment for trauma and post-traumatic stress. It helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their grip, and it does this in a way that does not require you to describe every detail of what you went through.

Helping a Stuck Memory Finish Processing

The working idea behind EMDR is that trauma can leave a memory improperly stored, frozen in the nervous system with all its original charge intact, so that it keeps firing as if the danger is present. That is why a traumatic memory does not fade the way ordinary memories do, and why it can hijack you in the present.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, often guided eye movements, while you briefly hold the memory in mind, which appears to help the brain do the processing it could not complete at the time. The memory does not vanish, but it settles into the past, where it belongs, and stops setting off the alarm.

Structured, Paced, and Safe

EMDR follows a structured protocol and moves at a pace you can tolerate, within a safe therapeutic relationship. You are never forced to relive anything beyond what you can handle, and a great deal of the early work is building the stability and safety that make the reprocessing possible.

We use EMDR as part of our trauma-focused care, including for veterans and for anyone carrying relational trauma or PTSD, and we integrate it with treatment for any depression, anxiety, or substance use that came with it.
